The Mariners' Museum, designated by Congress as America's National Maritime Museum, is home to the USS Monitor Center, which opened in March 2007. The Monitor Center is the official repository for the artifacts recovered from the famous Civil War ironclad ship that revolutionized naval warfare. Artifacts include The Monitor's iconic revolving gun turret, steam engine and cannons. The Center also tells the story of the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia, which Monitor engaged in an epic battle off Hampton Roads, Virginia on March 9, 1862.
